NEBOSH Award in Health and Safety at Work

This 3 day course covers the basic health and safety principles and practices essential in the workplace. These include:

  • Understanding risk assessments and control strategies;
  • Applying these control strategies to a number of common workplace hazards, including fire, electrical, transport and manual handling.

Unit HSW1: Workplace safety foundations

Element 1: The foundations of health and safety
Element 2: The responsibility for health and safety
Element 3: Health and safety risk assessment and control
Element 4: Hazards and controls associated with work equipment
Element 5: Transport safety
Element 6: Hazards and controls associated with working with electricity
Element 7: Fire safety
Element 8: Hazards and controls associated with manual handling and repetitive movement
Element 9: Hazards and controls associated with hazardous substances
Element 10: Hazards and controls associated with the working environment


Unit HSW1

Unit HSW1 is a taught unit, assessed by a one hour multiple choice examination
Each examination consists of forty questions (1 mark each) with one correct and three incorrect responses available per question
Each examination paper covers the whole unit syllabus with at least one question per unit element and all questions are compulsory

Unit HSW2

Unit HSW2 is assessed by a one-hour practical assessment carried out in the candidate’s own workplace
